PSI Successfully Implements Control System at the Cologne-Bonn Airport

PSI software controls all the luggage sorting and disposition processes in the Alpha hall

Berlin, 26 July 2007 - PSI has successfully concluded adaptations to the PSI computer control system for the luggage conveyor system in the Alpha hall at the Cologne-Bonn Airport. Right on time for the start of the Germanwings summer flight schedule and the summer vacations, the first and most extensive expansion was concluded with the modernization of the 26 check-in terminals and the associated luggage conveyor technology for Terminal 1. In the last few months the Cologne-Bonn Airport has conducted extensive system renewal measures in Terminal 1 and the associated luggage sorting system in Alpha hall.

For the upcoming renewal in Terminal 1, PSI adapted its control computer which they had already installed in Terminal 2 during operations so that all the luggage sorting and disposition activities in Alpha hall could also be controlled. The pieces of luggage are now transported from the check-in counter directly to the multi-stage luggage control system. All pieces of luggage are placed on a single sorting belt with 24 scanning stations and manually sorted on a luggage cart. Here every piece of luggage is first of all recorded with a hand scanner and when released, then loaded. Every one of the scanning stations is equipped with an LED display to show the relevant flight and sorting information. The piloting is also handled by the expanded computer.

Cargo lists with the number and wagon distribution of the individual pieces of luggage on each flight can be reproduced at two working places. The luggage wagons are collected at a single point and from there they are transported to the airplanes.

PSI AG develops and integrates complete solutions, on the basis of its own software, for the management of energy networks (electricity, gas, oil, water, heat), cross-company production management (steel, automotive, mechanical engineering, logistics) and infrastructure management for telecommunications, transport and safety. PSI was founded in 1969 and currently employs more than 1,000 persons in the group.
